SPACE BOOTY
As you get older your tastes change, and you get less excited about some things and more excited about others. Cereal box prizes have maintained a static level of excitement for me, though, from childhood into adulthood. Pouring out breakfast and finding a toy in my bowl fills me with irrational delight, even though I inevitably give them to my Dad, who likes to fiddle with things as he works. Here are some of our favorite prizes (John, post yours in the comments! I'll add it tomorrow):
Yuko: "a wind-up car from Cars"
Conrad: "a pair of 3D glasses that I wore so I could be like that asshole in Back To The Future ... they made my eyes hurt"
Ananth: "a watch I got in a box of Rice Krispies ... it broke but I kept wearing it because everything is awesome when you are eleven"
John: "I liked those mini lego sets. I don't know what cereal I got them from of if I'm imagining it."
In case you're wondering, we got Starfleet Command ... nice! Speaking of Star Trek, Yuko did some fan art ... click the image below to the full (contains Spoilers!):
We all enjoyed the movie quite a bit!

Comment by Ananth Tue, 05/26/2009 - 09:09Hah, that's awesome. I wish I had had one of those! I'd probably try to pull over my neighbor's car.
My dad still buys cereal
Comment by Nora (not verified) Tue, 05/26/2009 - 00:03My dad still buys cereal with toys in the boxes and gives them to me. My favorite is a Batman disc launcher.
Now I need to go buy applejacks for a Starfleet badge.
hey!
Comment by Jason (not verified) Tue, 05/26/2009 - 02:56i have the batman disk launcher too! i got it from koko crunch (i don't know if there's coco crunch where you people are in the world). i also have the batman and joker toys. this is the dark knight movie tie-in toys, though.
bah, i want a nerdy starfleet badge too! too bad they don't have apple jacks in my part of the word (loser is me).
We don't have Koko Crunch
Comment by Ananth Tue, 05/26/2009 - 09:11We don't have Koko Crunch here, but we have Cocoa Puffs and Cocoa Krispies ... where are you from? Either one of those might be a rebranded Koko Crunch.
hmm...no.
Comment by Jason (not verified) Wed, 05/27/2009 - 02:50cocoa puffs and cocoa krispies are totally different from koko crunch. we have cocoa puffs here in the Philippines, though. those are kinda expensive. koko crunch is made by nestle, BTW.
i took a stroll along the breakfast cereal displays at the nearest grocery from my office and found semi-old stock of other cereals with them batman toys. resisted urge to get another batsignal launcher at the cost of finishing of the cereal (you can see the toys, ruining the surprise).

I need to remember to go buy some cereal tomorrow.
I envy you guys
Comment by Nare (not verified) Tue, 05/26/2009 - 00:34I WISH there were those kind of cereal box prizes in my country, all we get are the cheaper stuff they make for that brown elephant, the wanna-be tiger and the family ¬¬
We deserve nerdy star trek badges too ;.;
all we get are the cheaper
Comment by Ananth Tue, 05/26/2009 - 09:13all we get are the cheaper stuff they make for that brown elephant, the wanna-be tiger and the family
I'm getting Frosted Flakes out of the wannabe tiger ... what are the other two?
I got a red Engineering
Comment by geener (not verified) Tue, 05/26/2009 - 01:08I got a red Engineering badge from Frosted Flakes the other day! YAY! Now I'm gonna eat some cheese-its for a Star Trek shirt! That movie has made me such a nerd for the Star Trek universe.
The best prize from a cereal I think was some promotional 3D glasses you could wear during a particular TV show on a particular day. Except I wore them all the time :D
Just Don't Die
Comment by McClaud (not verified) Tue, 05/26/2009 - 09:33When we beam down to the planet, okay? The red shirt insurance is killing Starfleet.

I don't know you either, but I appreciate your comment. :D
This is what happens when people give you Nick-names due to your sleeping habits. >_>
Yeah, uh...
Comment by stevehill (not verified) Tue, 05/26/2009 - 01:48I definitely thought (without reading first) that the fanart was actually a drawing of Conrad in a Star Trek uniform.

Is it wrong that I went out and got the new Star Trek 90210 Phaser and the light-up talking USS Enterprise with Kung Fu Grip?

Comment by Robert V Aldrich (not verified) Tue, 05/26/2009 - 13:52It either needs to be, or somebody needs to get right on that.
Dude, Target has it in
Comment by Virtual Bob (not verified) Wed, 05/27/2009 - 10:52Dude, Target has it in stock. Go to www.target.com & do a search on "Enterprise" in "Toys". Get ready to spend 30 buckazoids.
It's BIG. It lights up; it makes appropriate nerdy starship noises (Scotty would call it talking) and the "Kung Fu Grip" is actually the way it mounts to it's stand (K.F.G. sounds better than "ball/socket attachment tip").
No home is complete without one.
GET IT NOW!
Oh yeah...
Comment by John Kelly (not verified) Tue, 05/26/2009 - 06:50I liked those mini lego sets. I don't know what cereal I got them from or if I'm imagining it.
Oh man, I remember those ...

Comment by Anonymous (not verified) Tue, 06/16/2009 - 19:09Those were awesome. I think they were from Rice Crispies.
I remember that a while ago
Comment by Fraoch (not verified) Thu, 01/07/2010 - 01:54I remember that a while ago they put mini lego car kits in mini wheats. That's what I thought of when I read it. *shrug*
stupid mail away....
Comment by Kim (not verified) Tue, 05/26/2009 - 07:49Toys use to be in the many boxes of cereal...but now, very few that every has cool ones. It's usually the kind where you collect so many UPC and mail away for one, with a shipping and handling payment of course. I'm 26, so... I'm not that disappointed in getting a free toy, but it would be nice to find one every once in awhile. Stupid cereal companies.

Comment by Kim (not verified) Tue, 05/26/2009 - 07:51I should preview these before I post....

Memories
Comment by Tsubaki (not verified) Tue, 05/26/2009 - 07:52I used to get the color changing spoons in cereal boxes all the time. I was fascinated by the blue to green change! Sadly we don't have cereal boxes on college campus. u_u
I totally did the same
Comment by Kyon1288 (not verified) Tue, 05/26/2009 - 09:09I totally did the same thing! but sadly I got the klingon badge instead. I guess I have to get more cereal then.

I may or may not carry one
Comment by Bubbles (not verified) Tue, 05/26/2009 - 11:42I may or may not carry one in my bag, pretty much always. I bought three things of cereal, so I could have two and my husband could have one.
Looks like I'll be buying cereal again.

Man, I'm So Old!
Comment by McClaud (not verified) Tue, 05/26/2009 - 09:34When I was a kid, I fought to get the Tron disc cereal bowl from Pops cereal.
I still HAVE that bowl, too.
Best thing I ever got out of
Comment by Chelsea (not verified) Tue, 05/26/2009 - 09:49Best thing I ever got out of a cereal box was this awesome red and turquoise digital watch (from a box of Honeycomb, I think) that actually worked for, like, 2 years. I adored that thing. x3
Haha, Yuko, I love the Space Booty pic! Somehow those simple lines look just like... *Googles his name* Zachary Quinto! :D
Too good.
Comment by whatwith (not verified) Tue, 05/26/2009 - 09:50Now I feel spoiled, and want all comics to be about Star Trek and cereal toys. You've ruined me!
Ananth must have a thing for
Comment by Cheri (not verified) Tue, 05/26/2009 - 10:16Ananth must have a thing for cereal.
Good thing all the awesome toys come in the sugary-rot-your-teeth cereal.
I don't remember the toys I got from cereal boxes. I was the last child on a latter of 10 boys (my mom babysat...) and was never fast enough to gets my hands on the prize.
I do remember, though, the epic struggles over the said toy which always ended up with me crying and many a bite wound for all involved.
We all have a thing for
Comment by Ananth Tue, 05/26/2009 - 11:02We all have a thing for cereal! There are usually up to 5 or 6 different types of cereal on top of our fridge at all times.
I guess they call it
Comment by Cheri (not verified) Tue, 05/26/2009 - 13:21I guess they call it 'bachelors steak' for a reason.
Only five or six different
Comment by Durindana (not verified) Thu, 05/28/2009 - 01:25Only five or six different types? The instant I moved into my first apartment, I went out and bought something like ten different varieties, and I always keep them stocked.
It freaks my friends out when I open my cabinet and offer them cereal for a meal. No one ever thought I was a cereal junkie.
And there's a sealed smoked salmon living with the cereal. I have no clue why.
Ninja turtles?
Comment by Bubbles (not verified) Tue, 05/26/2009 - 11:45Anyone else remember the Ninja Turtles cereal bowls? It was a full sized bowl, and I kinda' remember them being actually wrapped to the box. I had Donatello and my brother had Michaelangelo.
Shit yeah! I remember
Comment by Cheri (not verified) Tue, 05/26/2009 - 13:20Shit yeah!
I remember those.
I didn't realize they came in cereal. I guess I was too young.
we had two
Comment by Kim (not verified) Tue, 05/26/2009 - 15:51I think we had Don and Mike too.... I loved them... but their colored masks wore off really easy.
Johnny Wander Moments
Comment by Robert V Aldrich (not verified) Tue, 05/26/2009 - 11:48God(s) bless cereal box toys. They're so cheap and ridiculous and yet so awesome.
I'm still disappointed over the Star-Trek-pins-in-the-cereal-boxes contest. I was so psyched to get all three Federation pins, but they discontinued the contest before I could get the Medical pins. So I've only got Command and Engineering...
...And I may have just answered why I don't have a girlfriend.
You think she's not out there right now?
Comment by conrad Tue, 05/26/2009 - 11:58Dude, you just have to find a girl with the Medical pin. I can see the Craigslist ad now:
SWM seeks SWF must have Medical pin from old mail-in cereal box offer. Looking for friendship and possibly more. Will not violate Prime Directive on first date.
