Hardwood floors for miles!

Hardwood floors for miles!

Tue, 08/18/2009 - 10:15 by Ananth in response to pardon our dust

Poor John and Yuko. They actually came in a couple of times in the 2 weeks prior to move-in to make the place spotless, and then everyone came in and tromped around in shoes. Dammit! Oh, and thank you to the Front Row Crew and Yuko's parents, who showed up as a veritable moving army and helped us get done before noon. Unbelievable!

Move-in was a measure of physical fitness, as we had to carry everything up five flights of stairs. Needless to say, none of us passed muster. Everything is in, though, but sadly we have no Internet access. Comics will update on time, but our responses to comments and e-mails will likely be a bit staggered until we're all hooked up.

Lastly, prepare to see a couple of new faces in the strip! How exciting!

Boxes boxes boxes boxes.

Comment by Anonymous (not verified) Tue, 08/18/2009 - 10:26

Oh noes! Slight problem I noticed. When you click previous on the front page it takes you back to the front page as if this comic 93 and 92.

Boxes everywhere can be quite a pain. When my family moved into the house we live in now I had to miss school for a day because I could NOT find ANY pants. Best excuse I've ever had.

Damn! I'll pass it along to

Comment by Ananth Tue, 08/18/2009 - 16:09

Damn! I'll pass it along to Conrad, someone else mentioned that last week. Weird.

un-opened boxes

Comment by Kimba (not verified) Tue, 08/18/2009 - 10:40

We bought a house and moved in in Nov, we still have some un-opened boxes. Moving is such a mess.

The only thing I'm gung-ho

Comment by Ananth Tue, 08/18/2009 - 16:10

The only thing I'm gung-ho about unpacking is the books. After that things just wander out of boxes as they will.

Comment by SarahSongbrd (not verified) Tue, 08/18/2009 - 10:46

This exact same thing happened to me this week. Moved into a new apartment with some roommates. I got there first, scrubbed all the floors, Vacuumed the carpet, cleaned everything.
A few days later, My roommates moved in......So much for cleaning.

It's still worth it! But

Comment by Ananth Tue, 08/18/2009 - 16:11

It's still worth it! But yeah, all that cleaning trampled upon ...

Deja vu

Comment by Marshall (not verified) Tue, 08/18/2009 - 10:48

This happened to us too! My roommates and I spent a couple days cleaning our new place spotless. Then in the next couple of days we trodded around in our shoes, spreading around dirt everywhere while we moved everything in. Good times.

Not helpful

Comment by Michael J (not verified) Tue, 08/18/2009 - 10:49

I don't see a certain hat wearing writer helping in the second panel Ananth.

Dude, you don't even know.

Comment by conrad Tue, 08/18/2009 - 15:35

Dude, you don't even know. Ananth was a trooper that day. Ananth, John and I arrived around two hours earlier than everyone else, and hauled probably 30% of the load up those stairs.

Funny story, tho: our super was helping us unload, and he was acting like a foreman down there. He would yell at us when we sat down or took up a load that was too light. We definitely won't have to go to the gym for the next few months, haha.

Hahaha, I was mostly

Comment by Ananth Tue, 08/18/2009 - 16:12

Thanks Conrad! It's true, I wasn't a lazy-ass.

Hahaha, after everyone else showed up I was mostly downstairs helping to unload the truck out onto the steps. We actually pulled the Penske truck up onto the curb, all the way up to the steps. Then the super had us tie bags and things with handles up so that they could get pulled in through the 5th floor window. It was pretty cool.

Comment by Aido Tue, 08/18/2009 - 16:51

I wanted to make sure that the people helping us were in the panel before the rest of us were. :/  ANANTH IS IN THE BACK.  OR AT THE TRUCK.

oh snap, hatless ananth?! oh wait...

Comment by Jingseng (not verified) Wed, 08/19/2009 - 08:04

that was my first thought... snap, ananth without a hat?!? really?!? then I thought, wait, he doesn't wear glasses....

Hahahaha. Just kidding guys.

Comment by Michael (not verified) Thu, 08/20/2009 - 22:23

Hahahaha. Just kidding guys. I could never see Ananth just laying about and not helping, and Jingseng? Ananth does wear glasses actually.

This means we get more stat cards, right? How are we supposed to tell one character from the other without STATS?!

Oh shit, you are right. We

Comment by Ananth Tue, 08/18/2009 - 16:14

Oh shit, you are right. We will be needing some new ones.

Comment by Razor (not verified) Tue, 08/18/2009 - 11:34

FIVE flights of stairs? Uggghhh. I complain at ONE flight. When I move in a few weeks and I start to complain, I will remember your ordeal and suffer in silence.

Doing the stairs on a daily

Comment by Ananth Tue, 08/18/2009 - 16:16

Doing the stairs on a daily basis I'm okay with! Just not with all that junk, oh man. That was an ordeal.

little tip

Comment by Kristopher (not verified) Tue, 08/18/2009 - 12:48

I grew up in a house with hardwood floors and all the apartments I've lived in have had them as well. So I will let you know that dust builds up like CRAZY. I recommend putting rugs down where you can. Also, try some of those felt sticky things to put on the bottoms of your heavy furniture. We were vacuuming the apartment one time and shifted the couch to get under it (tons of dust bunnies) and the leg of the couch gouged a huge scratch in the floor. I had to use a power sander and refinish the floor(it still looked like ass afterward, because there was a nice clean spot in the floor surrounded by aged looking wood)

Yikes, thanks for the heads

Comment by Ananth Tue, 08/18/2009 - 16:18

Yikes, thanks for the heads up! I intend to sweep every morning, but this is good to know.

You can get little felty pad

Comment by Yu Huo (not verified) Thu, 08/20/2009 - 04:46

You can get little felty pad things with one sticky side, to stick on your furniture legs, out of B&Q or equivalent hardware shops. They come in pre-cut circles, or you can get little rectangles that you can cut yourself.

So did you and yuko move in together? (just being interested ;))

Ahaha, we did. ;)

Ahaha, we did. ;)

Moving in

Comment by Dcloud (not verified) Tue, 08/18/2009 - 13:37

I've been living like that for a month now do to the reason that I'm moving into college and my parents keep getting me boxes of stuff I'll never use .... Side note yay new faces!!!

man, I just moved my room

Comment by Kai (not verified) Tue, 08/18/2009 - 13:50

man, I just moved my room last year and its still not unpacked XD can't wait till I get to move house (soon...soon....)

I know what you mean.

Comment by Anonymous (not verified) Tue, 08/18/2009 - 15:08

I helped my cousin move out of Manhattan out to Queens (I think, might have been the Bronx) and while we did have movers, we still were taking all of his stuff (virtually the entire apartment in one fell swoop) and we were all carrying a lot of heavy crap. The elevator wasn't working, and we were on the 4th floor, and it really sucked. Fortunately, I was adequately trained by my previous summer job working on a maintenance crew at a country club/horse show club. Hardcore.

Oh man, hardcore indeed.

Comment by Ananth Tue, 08/18/2009 - 16:32

Oh man, hardcore indeed.

Dude, you're going about it all wrong

Comment by Robert V Aldrich (not verified) Tue, 08/18/2009 - 15:30

Here's how you move:
Step 1 - Take out an add in the news paper advertising 'Strong Man contest' at your apartment/office on move-in day.
Step 2 - Buy a cheap 'World's Best Mom' award's statue, tape over the title and write 'World's Strongest Man' as the grand prize.
Step 3 - Buy a case of protein drinks and/or protein bars for a consolation prize.
Step 4 - The day of the move, hand out cheap numbers to each of the burly contestants who showed up. Call carrying the boxes up the stairs 'Mountain Rescue Lift' and make it the first leg of the Strong Man contest.
Step 5 - Sit back as these guys compete to move you in the fastest time.

Heck, you could probably even charge an entrance fee.

Rob, you are a genius. I am

Comment by Ananth Tue, 08/18/2009 - 16:35

Rob, you are a genius. I am actually so sad I didn't even get to try this. Next time for sure ... hahahaha I think I could make it work.

Comment by Louis (not verified) Tue, 08/18/2009 - 16:53

Haha aww! I love Yuko's move-in day clothes, three quarter pants are awesome for heavy lifting. And don't even bother trying to keep hardwood floors clean. I've lived at my place for six years now, and the minute you finish cleaning, something somewhere will move or be moved and a two metre radius around that will appear dirty again. We vacuum and steam mop maybe once a month and just try to ignore all the dust and animal fur tumbleweeds in the meantime.

It's actually funny, I love these hardwood floors so much, they're the reason I picked this one over a couple of other places. But the hallway is so skinny and got so dirty every time you walked down it, I had it carpeted at the same time as we re-carpeted the bedrooms. It's dark brown now, and technically dirt-free becauseyoucan'tseeitshhhitreallyisclean

moving =exausting

Comment by Kyon (not verified) Tue, 08/18/2009 - 17:21

Being a military brat we moved way too much, when I started college I thought I would be in one place longer than two years but! after moving thru 4 different dorm buildings first semester then transferring it seems staying in one place is but a pipe dream. I agree with the books thing, most important to unpack its like half the stuff I have anyway.
Grats on the new place! its pretty exciting thing really.

Gasp! Oh, if it were so! Be still, my beating heart...

Hup hup hup~!

Comment by Emi (not verified) Tue, 08/18/2009 - 20:46

The super was so funny, except that he wouldn't let me carry big stuff because I was a girl. He was organizing everybody and apparently he has crazy parties! Yeah, sorry about the floors, Yuko. I feel bad about that. Any other time we would take our shoes off at the door, but when you're running up the stairs, it's a wee bit difficult. And Ananth, sorry about the accidental annoying Otakon fanboy. He was not our fault.

HAHAHA oh no problem! XD

Comment by Ananth Tue, 08/18/2009 - 21:05

HAHAHA oh no problem! XD S'all good ... I totally apologize, I was a little cranky that day too, and he definitely wasn't anyone's fault but his own! It's just that we were moving all day, and then Yuko and I were out till midnight, and then I had to wake up at 6 AM the next morning, ride back to NJ in the Penske truck, and drive back to DC. I was not looking forward to it! Sorry again! D:

I'm sorry about the Otakon

Comment by Judith (not verified) Wed, 08/19/2009 - 07:19

I'm sorry about the Otakon fanboy. He was my fault. Now I feel kinda bad. :(

And sorry about the floors! Our floors were filthy when we first moved in here (covered in broken plaster!), but I didn't touch them with a broom until everything else was set up.

You have a really nice place though. Welcome to NYC!

No worries, no worries!

Comment by Ananth Wed, 08/19/2009 - 09:13

No worries, no worries! Ahaha, the floors were just funny, that's why we shared ... there's no way we could have done move-in taking off our shoes and then putting them back on. It's just one of the dangers of moving!

Heavy Lifting

Comment by Suess'sDoctor (not verified) Thu, 05/30/2013 - 23:16

My god yes. At my school, on the last day of the school year, they have the kids stack the chairs and desks and move them out of the classroom. One of my friends(a guy) was carrying a desk and needed help. I tried to help him by taking the desk, but then the janitor stopped me. My janitor thought I wasn't strong enough even though i was pushing desks around like a boss.

That, or he enjoys watching my friend suffer.

Oh wow. John hasn't been in

Comment by Anonymous (not verified) Tue, 08/18/2009 - 21:38

Oh wow. John hasn't been in a comic in eons!

Haha, moving in is always hard.

Note to self:

Comment by Ramiel (not verified) Tue, 08/18/2009 - 22:05

"Put sign outside door saying that room is clean, walk barefoot."

Unfortunately furniture can't move. That's why we have to lug them around >:/

And since everyone are carrying things from outside, trekking dirt inside is well...inevitable >X/

Hardwood Floors are Pretty

Comment by McClaud (not verified) Tue, 08/18/2009 - 22:09

But a pain in the ass to keep clean, even when people take their shoes off.

You needed Harima, Hanai and Ichijo there to help you move your stuff. They would've impressed your super.

Comment by Johanna (not verified) Wed, 08/19/2009 - 01:23

I'm currently in the process of moving house, and everything has started going wrong! The bathroom has flooded! The toilet has been painted the wrong colour! Aaah!

People paint toilets? ...You

Comment by Anonymous (not verified) Wed, 08/19/2009 - 18:20

People paint toilets?
...You can do that?

Oh yes

Comment by Johanna (not verified) Fri, 08/21/2009 - 01:27

Ours has been repainted a lovely shade of terracotta, I'll have you know

And thats why I don't have hardwood floors.

Comment by Daniel (not verified) Wed, 08/19/2009 - 02:00

They muss up too fast! That said, they are easier to maintain at a clean level then carpet. I hope the move went off without any significant bodily harm, and that everything got there safely. I also hope the place is set up and habitable in rapid order.
And, as always, love the art.

I liked being able to help.

Comment by Natalie (not verified) Wed, 08/19/2009 - 08:03

I liked being able to help. It was a good work out too, even if I could only carry some of the lighter stuff. Your appartment was so was kidna a treat just to be there. We want to live in one like that in the future.
It was also good to re-meet you all, and I hope to get to know you all better soon. It's too bad not everybody could be there for the bulk of the karaoke.

I'm also sorry about "the Otakon" Scott. He came in town from Bumblescum Virgina for the weekend, and we didn't realize he'd be that awkward... He's really a nice guy, but I guess he got kinda nervous around such a large group of not-hicks. To be honest, he kinda annoyed me a lot all weekend. From now on, we'll keep his visits separate from doing FRC stuff, since he doesn't mesh well.

No need to apologize about

Comment by Ananth Wed, 08/19/2009 - 09:15

No need to apologize about anything! ;) You guys came out and helped us like crazy, and we super appreciate it. Thank you again for making so many trips up and down the stairs!! And next time we'll make it for all of karaoke, it was just a crazy-ass day with too many things to do.

Good Luck!

Comment by John K (not verified) Wed, 08/19/2009 - 08:20

Hope you get everything unpacked smoothly and settle in wonderfully!

Comment by ... and Shakers (not verified) Wed, 08/19/2009 - 09:06

My lady and I moved this weekend as well (down three stories and then up three) so I feel your pain. You never realize just how much stuff you have (or how heavy it all is) until you have to carry it somewhere.

Shirt arrived
