Comic's up! Not as early as we wanted, but these take a little longer to do. Man, that basilisk is adorable.

The new tees shipped to us earlier today ... we should be getting them in soon. For those of you with RSS readers, I activated the Product RSS in the store, so you can know as soon as we put them up.

This reminds me, we're not sure we'll be doing the ZooLOLogy shirt again, so if you wanted one of those now is definitely the time to snag one! I think we'll consider the PaleontoLOLgy shirt to be the new LOLogy tee.

It's a shame you can't get them for Christmas. I decided to just buy a men's size for my sister. She'll still love it and probably use it for a pajama shirt.

This is going to end up like that episode of the twilight zone where everyone in the world disappears except for one guy (Time Enough at Last I think it was) isn't it? Only everyone's going to turn to stone and if the gal's glasses break... well, it won't matter, will it? ._.

I did know she was blind, I even commented on it in the last comic. Its hence why I said "if here glasses break, it won't even matter" cause in the original Twilight Zone episode, the guy found all the books he could ever read, but his glasses broke, so he couldn't read anymore. IE. Ultimate Irony.

If the girl's glasses break then its like... oh well, doesn't even matter xD

That as brought up in the last comic's comment section. The general consensus was that the names are fairly interchangeable. To be honest, I think basilisk runs off the tongue a bit better than cockatrice, and it's easier to make a bird look cute, so I'm willing to overcome the quibble.

This is my favorite story so far. The little blind girl is so cute, and the subject matter so delightfully light-hearted and yet also sinister.

It reminds me of the story involving Plotinus of Antioch, a man who was blind from birth and befriended a Basilisk, hooding its eyes in order to tame it. But then it died upon being led into the city, where a cock's crow killed it. Cock's crows, as it turns out, are lethal to a basilisk.

Despite my love for this strip, I have one issue. All traditional sources on mythology I've read says that a Basilisk's gaze is instantly deadly, and doesn't turn people to stone. And I know my mythology, thank you very much. I've got like a dozen books on mythology, so I know my stuff.

Nonetheless, a good story. Keep up the good work.

Pliny the Elder, Natural History 8. 78 (trans. Rackham) (Roman encyclopedia C1st A.D.) :
"The Basilisci Serpentis (Basilisk Serpent) also has the same power [to kill like the Catoblepas by sight alone]. It is a native of the province of Cyrenaica, not more than 12 inches long, and adorned with a bright white marking on the head like a sort of diadem. It routs all snakes with its hiss, and does not move its body forward in manifold coils like other snakes but advancing with its middle raised high. It kills bushes not only by its touch but also by its breath, scorches up grass and bursts rocks. Its effect on other animals is disastrous: it is believed that once one was killed with a spear by a man on horseback and the infection rising through the spear killed not only the rider but also the horse. Petrified people aren't dead, they're merely in a suspended animation of sorts. If you're a bit older school, you'd be looking for a Stone to Flesh spell from a cleric or mage. :-)

According to Harry Potter, mandrake's root is involved, somehow. However, I would try a golden needle first. Not easy to come by, but it could work! It works in Final Fantasy, anyways...

A lot of people have spoken up ... we're thinking about reprinting them down the line, I think. Probably not for a little while, we'll see! I'd like to clear out some space for new tees next year. :)

we're the lucky ones - we get to admire the little basilisk without getting petrified... everyone else in the JohnnyWander universe gets to appreciate its cuteness for like 1 second... then they die(?)

think they die? or will there be some sort of saving? (I vote probably no saving, or else JW would lose the darkside rep it's cultivating haha)

The basilisk resembles the chupacabra from Alien Dice, not that I think you even read Alien Dice. Delilah is cute, though.

Hate to be a dick, but thats no Basilisk, it'd be a Cockatrice... Often Cockatrice are labeled Basilisks, but a Basilisk is more lizard than anything else (hence its counterpart in the reptilian family), while a Cockatrice is resemblant of a rooster (with wings unlike the Basilisk)... Once again, I apologize for nitpicking, but hunting such beasts is my profession. Right, delightful to see such a portrayal, the chicks truly aren't confrontational in nature so to see one cast one as companionable is refreshing.

i think the art style for JW fits so awesomely right here that i must chuckle every time i see puppy the basilisk.

Actually, that reminds me of a House of Mystery comic I read once. This guy actually defeated a basilisk because he was blind.
