It's not a contest (but it totally is)

Thu, 01/20/2011 - 15:32 by Ananth in response to the return of sweetie pie

Yuko has mentioned the sweet potato plant in comics past - we left for one weekend and we came back it had exploded! Yuko was very pleased. I'm waiting for it to outgrow its pot and choke us in our sleep. You'll see.

A little while ago Nina Matsumoto made a post about the range of athletic body types. This post included a huge collection of reference images of Olympic athletes, and their body types run the gamut. In that spirit Yuko decided to create a lineup of characters old and new. Here is the male lineup, and here is the female lineup. Yuko's also put together a wallpaper of the lineup, including some additions that didn't make it into the original posts.

OR this is an advertisement for the new JW teal underwear line. Very tasteful.

We are trucking along! We're doing quite a few shows this year - I'll be talking about those very soon!

See you next week!

If we get JW radio silence for a few weeks, we'll know what's become of you.

Oh hey sweet potatoes! If

Comment by Youko (not verified) Thu, 01/20/2011 - 18:55

Oh hey sweet potatoes! If you guys don't mind having very small actual potatoes, the leaves are totally edible and have a nice tangy flavour to it. The recipe is really easy, too.

-Take a large plate and put a bit of olive oil/sesame on it (circle the olive oil/sesame around about 3-4 times). Put desired amount of soy sauce and diced garlic onto the oil.

-Boil sweet potato leaves.

-Drain leaves and put them hot onto the plate with the oil/soy sauce/garlic, and mix around until even.

Sorry, correction--not

Sorry, correction--not sesame but sesame oil.

I love Ananth's expression in the 2nd panel. "OMGOSH YUKO BACK AWAY FROM THAT THING IT'S GOING TO EAT YOU"

Comment by Chelsea (not verified) Thu, 01/20/2011 - 19:56

Yeah, go sweet potato! :D

Thank you guys SO MUCH for linking to the body types post! I've been looking for high res copies of these images for months with no luck. Thankyouthankyouthankyou!

I think...

I like how Anaths facial

I like how Anaths facial expression is like a creeper from Minecraft xDD

you have violated our patent

Comment by Anonymous (not verified) Fri, 01/21/2011 - 03:38

by planting and cultivating that GE sweet potato you have violated Monsanto's patent on all plant life. Monsanto will be forced to take swift action against your plant. we have dispatched an agent with a b.o.o.t to eradicate the plant.

Ok lady, what is going on here. First of all, very nice work on the lineup. But there's one thing that bothers me about it. Aside from Pythias and Tal at the end there, who are giants, the guy Daniel to the left is the tallest by far. He is also a skinny, bean pole built kinda guy with brown hair.

...I am a very tall, skinny, bean pole built kinda guy with brown hair named Dan. WTF Yuko. Are you spying on me?! >:|

Also I love the new comic. Make sure Anath doesn't try to destroy the plant in an act of self defense.

Thank you for the link to

Thank you for the link to Nina Matsumoto's site, I passed it on to an artist friend of mine who was very appreciative. She offers her thanks as well ^_^.

I had the same thing happen

Comment by Aikachi (not verified) Fri, 01/21/2011 - 14:29

I had the same thing happen with a yellow onion in my fridge, it was back there for a couple months, in the cold and the complete blackness most of the time, and yet it sprouted. I planted it and it got HUGE, but then it seemed to die when it split into seed onions a while later, then THOSE got huge. The life cycle of edible plants, eh?

Unrelated: will you be stocking phoenix down shirts again? I really want one :D

Watch out for the giant once you get there. Try to trip him.

Comment by Alain (not verified) Fri, 01/21/2011 - 16:07

The growth looks vertical to me. A few more months and you'll be able to climb through the branches to reach the big castle in the clouds. Good luck!

So much win that...

Today, I had a timed writing about how media can influence violent behavior in teenagers. Being the nerd I am, I used Pokemon as a source of violent actions and animal abuse.

Here's where it gets awesome.

I needed to cite something about this. I look around my backpack, and find the book I purchased from you a few months ago. So I get back to work on my essay.

"In the collection of short comics Johnny Wander, Yuko states that pokemon is "Charles Darwin meets cockfighting" (Johnny Wander vol. 1: Don't Burn the House down, by Yuko Ota and Ananth Panagariya, page 51)."

*high five* When I was a sophomore in high school, I did a term paper on cartoons and referenced F. Schodt's "Manga! Manga! The Art of Japanese Comics." My BA thesis was on selling manga to an American audience. I've even referenced the leadership of Optimus Prime in a paper for my Master's degree (in leadership).

Geek scholarship, represent! =)

Sad part is I actually was REALLY hoping for some JohnnyWander branded underwear. That would be the best thing ever.

I'm starting a petition.

Another similar story.....

...... Which involved an Aloe Vera plant - just a baby. I had neglected to water or fertilize the poor thing for years, and yet it continued to stay green, and even GREW some, on what seemed like absolutely nothing.

Eventually I remembered it, and started to care for it - it EXPLODED - twice as big in two days - growing like bamboo chutes. I still have this extremely tenacious plant, and to this day, it still baffles me, as to why it's still alive.

On sweet potato growth...

After seeing this comic I remembered that I had 3 yams in the closet that I had never eaten; went to look at them, all of them had sprouted these giant tendrilly things! Not sure what to do with them; they look like they are quite happy, I wouldn't mind making them happier/potting them, but I"m not sure what to use in terms of potting soil/watering/etc. >< I'm sure google could tell me, but since you guys had such success, any advice?

Comment by Sven (not verified) Tue, 01/25/2011 - 12:52

"Absence makes the heart grow stronger", or in this case, "absence makes the plant grow stronger".

What you have to do is put those sweet potatoes in a pot, bid them farewell before abandoning them for precisely five days to gallivant elsewhere, then return.

At least, that's what this comic seems to imply.

(Oh God... maybe the reason for the sweet potato's abnormal growth is because IT ATE SOMEONE WHILE THEY WERE AWAY.)

Comment by Sven (not verified) Tue, 01/25/2011 - 12:49

For some bizarre reason, I just mentally combined (fuuuuuuuuuusiiiioooon... HA!) Sweetie Pie and a maw. That was a slightly frightening mental image.

But don't worry, I don't think Sweetie Pie will eat you guys. After all, it can photosynthesize. Although... there is a possibility it will develop carnivorous tendencies...

And then...

Sweetie Pie, Wolf, and the wolflings took over the city, the state, the continent, and eventually harnessed the mass effect to colonize the galaxy and become the Asari of non-nervous-system'ed plant life.

Meanwhile, Wolf and the Wolflings, feat. Sweetie Pie, became a popular human rock band.
