Catmera charms back in stock! And book talk!

This drink is super refreshing! Have it when it's very hot. There are probably some good variations on this recipe too, but we haven't gotten too adventurous yet. We tend to favor the white grape concentrate for this recipe, but you can get dark grape concentrate as well. Additionally, some of our friends have mentioned using regular old grape juice and frozen spinach, which I assume works exactly the same.

Speaking of recipes, our pal L posts some great illustrated recipes over on Tumblr - check 'em out!

Catmera charms are back in the store!

In response to the last comic several of you mentioned that the dog might be his - we do know for a fact that the dog was his girlfriend's, but the stories you posted about tough guys with their own little dogs were pretty cute!

Book talk! I finished the first Hunger Games book. Read the whole damn thing practically in an evening, couldn't put it down. Didn't feel like it ended strongly, but the rest of the book is so fun that I just ignored it. Definitely keeping an eye on the upcoming movie. I'm going to read the second book soon (I've been let down easy by a lot of people regarding #2 and #3, but I figure I gotta read them). Your own reading lists were pretty varied! I did notice Diana Wynne Jones come up a lot - Yuko is a big fan and has read a couple of her books. I made a note of a lot of titles you guys & gals mentioned, so many of them are on my to-read list. Someone mentioned China Miéville - I think that'll probably be my next group of books to tackle after I'm done with the Hunger Games series. I loved Perdido Street Station.

Have a good one! Catch you next Tuesday.

Sounds good, but I'm allergic to spinach. Know any good substitutes?

I've heard that you can swap

Comment by Ananth Thu, 06/30/2011 - 19:32

I've heard that you can swap out spinach for Swiss chard, but I haven't tried it myself so it's tough to say! I think most leafy greens would probably work out okay.

Comment by Suri (not verified) Thu, 06/30/2011 - 17:58

ooooooohh sounds delicious AND nutritious! *shot*
Mint and grape sounds like those tri layer gum things, which my friends were like "OMG sounds yummy! *munch*..... bleh.... it's like someone tried to stuff a grape gummy and a breath mint down my throat at the same time." but maybe that's because they used a red grape flavor, which is WAAAAAY different than white grape.
Is there a substitute for spinach? makes me wonder.

Bacon blended in bacon grease. Garnish with bacon bits.

Another recipe you may want to try: frozen mixed berries, fresh or frozen kale, orange juice, and mint. Breakfast of choice!

Your welcome, another version is to switch out the orange juice for kefir. Although if you stick with the orange juice you can freeze it and make sorbet!

China Miéville is great...

Comment by Adeline (not verified) Thu, 06/30/2011 - 22:04

China Miéville is great... you should check out "Un Lun Dun" (or Unlundun.. or Unlondon... I'm not sure what the actual published title is, but it's definitely one of the three). It's an incredibly easy read; much, much more of a young adult novel than Perdido Street Station, Iron Council, or King Rat, but it's still fantastic in its own way. Good for those I-don't-feel-like-thinking-too-much-about-my-book days!

Evan has that book, actually

Worth it

Comment by Jabber W. (not verified) Fri, 07/01/2011 - 00:05

My computer's battery died. I played Fallout. I went to work. Then spent the next four (five?) hours getting up to date here, and being totally creepy (by that I mean Tumblr, sorry). I'm pretty socially awkward in person, so in spirit of internetism, I try to be out-going and friendly online (i.e. the exact opposite of real life). I have loved all of these comics I've read and shared a bunch with my friends because they remind me of us! Spending all day on this was way better than video games. So, thank you for taking so much time out of your lives to create this beautiful thing for strangers!

Thanks! Glad we can

I guess I kinda missed this train, but as long as people are recommending books, Mistborn by Brandon Sanderson is one of the best books I've read in a long time. Sort of like Game of Thrones, but less "terrible things always happen all the time" and more action. Also, Garth Nix is pretty dang great.

Thanks for the rec! I knew

Comment by Ananth Fri, 07/01/2011 - 11:18

Thanks for the rec! I knew Sanderson sounded familiar, he's the guy wrapping up the Wheel of Time series.

I like John comics

but he needs to keep being super intense-serious, it's the best.

I want to try this!

Comment by Silver C. (not verified) Fri, 07/01/2011 - 05:07

Reading through it, I want to try it! Veggies with juice isn't new to me, and I've been known to indulge a few veggie-fruit juice drinks but never home made (because our blender broke and we've never bothered to replace it), but the problem with some stores is that they use syrup or sugar.

This drink in the strip is just as is, right? No need for sugar or syrup?

No sugar or syrup! Although

Comment by Ananth Fri, 07/01/2011 - 11:19

No sugar or syrup! Although you can add it if you want. We found that the grape juice and mint bring enough flavor to the drink.

uuuum ginger ale?

Comment by Spebele (not verified) Fri, 07/01/2011 - 05:51

How the hell do you get the ginger ale in the blender without exploding in a burst of carbon dioxide?!

My Mom once ruined the whole kitchen while shaking some Milk-Shake with sparkling water XD
I think its pretty decorative with spinach ...

It's probably stirred in

Comment by Ananth Fri, 07/01/2011 - 11:21

It's probably stirred in afterwards? I think John only added ginger ale once, with no problems.

Comment by Spebele (not verified) Sat, 07/02/2011 - 06:02

that makes sense ^^

that actually sounds tasty,

Comment by DisposablePal (not verified) Fri, 07/01/2011 - 06:10

that actually sounds tasty, i might make that this weekend to serve for cookout guests. i just started the Hunger Games wednesday night and i'm already on chapter 19, i'll finish it today for sure. it's been really good so far. i just looked at some of the casting and a lot of it is spot on like Woody Harleson as Haymitch.

Oh MAN that's a great

we don't get frozen concentrates

Comment by Kristen (not verified) Fri, 07/01/2011 - 08:28

HMM, that's a tough one!

Comment by Ananth Fri, 07/01/2011 - 11:24

HMM, that's a tough one! Someone further up in the comments said that they use pineapple juice ... honestly, anything with flavor to conceal the spinach a bit will probably work well.

Comment by Patrick (not verified) Fri, 07/01/2011 - 12:12

I can say that using regular grape juice NOT from concentrate is a terrible idea - it doesn't mask the flavour of the spinach at all. Also, using frozen spinach is a terrible idea.

B-but spinach is delicious!

Comment by Regular Polyhedra (not verified) Mon, 07/04/2011 - 17:44

B-but spinach is delicious! Why would you want to mask it?

A couple years ago I had a dental fiasco that ended up with me unable to open or close my mouth beyond roughly half an inch for over a month. I was DYING for iron and protein in non-sweet form. So I mixed pain yogurt with a crapton of spinach and a healthy squeeze of sriracha and it was AWESOME. I am still convinced this would make a bitchin' pasta sauce.

That is my weird food story thinks!

Weird drinks and Books

Comment by Anonymous (not verified) Fri, 07/01/2011 - 10:13

My mother makes this weird "green juice" that I think is spinach and maybe some other vegetables? Anyway, we usually throw some mint in there, because it runs rampant in our backyard. You don't get a lot of minty flavored drinks.

As for books, Diana Wynne Jones is good, but you should check out Kage Baker. She's got a fantastic fantasy series starting with "The Anvil of the World," and another sci-fi series about cyborgs. It's got intrigue and reads like historical fiction. It's the best.

Catmera Charms!!!!

Comment by Anonymous (not verified) Fri, 07/01/2011 - 13:33

AHHHH so glad you finally have those charms available again, I'd missed it last time and I've been pretty crazy about checking the site regularly (read: 5 times a day) in hopes of seeing them up.

Love the comic, love the merch, love the smoothie advice. You all rock my socks!

I like spinach on its own though...>->

Comment by MuonParticle (not verified) Fri, 07/01/2011 - 14:31

Cool, but that site you linked to has icky seafood (granted I live in the West in the middle of 5-6 states so our seafood sucks).

I appreciate the easy recipe for peach cobbler though! (and the drawn people are cute)

Also, I don't read those types of books but Hawking's new book is pretty awesome, then again, I'm a science nerd.

A few questions though.
Does any kind of mint work? (i.e. peppermint, spearmint, orange mint, etc.)
Do you grow your own mint or buy from a store?
What is the answer to life, the universe, and everything?
