The left hand lives

Thu, 08/09/2012 - 17:34 by Ananth in response to omnivore cat

It's not that Rook is vegetarian, or a carnivore, or anything like that. It's just that he's always hungry and loves to eat. I think it would be easier to list what he doesn't like to eat. Here we go:

That should cover it.

More left-handed comics, till Tuesday at least! That's doctor day.

Shows: We'll be doing SPX and NYCC this year, and I believe that's it. More details on those as we get them.

See you next week!

So you're ambidextrous now?

The rate at which you improve with your left hand is amazing, Yuko. Keep going!

Seriously! I can't believe

Comment by Ruth (not verified) Thu, 08/09/2012 - 18:04

Seriously! I can't believe how good this is. I had to scroll down and double check that she was still drawing left-handed.

I generally get compliments on my tidy handwriting, but when I had to write with my left hand for a while due to a bout of tendinitis, it was comparable to my compositions from kindergarten.

I too had to check to figure

Comment by Shorts (not verified) Thu, 08/09/2012 - 22:21

I too had to check to figure out if this was a right- or left-handed page. I find it stunning that Yuko has improved so much with her left hand in the space of 3 pages.

I'm right handed and anything I write/draw with my left is always illegible. I try to use my wrist and my elbow instead of the muscles in my hand...

Comment by Leah (not verified) Thu, 08/09/2012 - 18:48

I think Rook might be part Labrador retriever. They eat anything as well.

P.s. I am in awe that this comic was done with Yuko's non-dominant hand. *bows down*

Some cats will eat just about anything.

Comment by Alex Ross (not verified) Thu, 08/09/2012 - 19:07

One cat we've been taking care of was a stray, and we're holding on to her until we can find her a home. There was once a time where I was holding a tortilla chip and not paying attention. She bit the corner off the tortilla chip and ate it. That's not even the strangest thing she's done for food.

I just got a kitty last weekend that looks like a mixture of rook and cricket. I named him rook though because the night after we got him he did that "helloooo" thing and creeped me out.

Feed him almonds.

If he can eat that, THEN he can eat anything.

Yuko's left-handed comics

Comment by Delia (not verified) Thu, 08/09/2012 - 20:43

Yuko's left-handed comics have improved exponentially! Wow! Talk about adaptation!

It's always weird to me when cat's have the (what I call, anyway) vacuum-cleaner-appetites. It feels like it should be such a dog quality! Are you sure he's not a dog in a cat's body?

Comment by Pi (not verified) Thu, 08/09/2012 - 21:44

The last two panels are killing me. The vacant look on Rook's face, completely focused on eating. The "gomf" sound effects. Yuko's rage.

Comment by Eva (not verified) Thu, 08/09/2012 - 21:50

That's funny. My cat likes to eat pineapple sherbet, fruit and all.

Cats are dandy!

Comment by TheMaverickk (not verified) Thu, 08/09/2012 - 22:02

Cats tend to be more omnivore then most would expect. Cats will eat vegetables and fruits if they enjoy them. It really depends on their personality.

Currently we have two cats. One of them for the most part eats anything but then again there are certain weird things he bugs us for insistently. One of those things are blueberries. He really enjoys those.

Our other cat could care less for human food... she mainly sticks to eating raw style meat/cat food products. Still oddly enough she will eat mints. For whatever reason we have a cat that is self conscience of her breath.

vegetarian cat

Comment by Jess (not verified) Thu, 08/09/2012 - 22:26

Despite our best efforts, one of our cats seems to actively lean towards vegetarian. We've had to pull her out of the recycling where she was licking the spent tofu tub, and from climbing into our plates to eat the dish that used it. She eats almost any veggie that we put in front of her (we're careful about which ones we offer her). She even likes nutritional yeast (which we gave her to help with fleas.

Comment by Kyle Wright (not verified) Thu, 08/09/2012 - 22:30

I had a cat that loved cantaloupe melons. Only Cantaloupe. He would run into the kitchen the moment he could smell the cut cantaloupe and then if you didn't give him some right away he would attack your leg until you did, then slobber it up as fast as he could. We could never figure it out. He lived to be 20 years old and was only weaker his last 2 years, so whatever it was, it seemed to work for him.

My cat is like that but with

Comment by Anonymous (not verified) Fri, 08/10/2012 - 01:50

My cat is like that but with watermelons! I swear she can hear/smell watermelon from the other side of the house. It's crazy, since I've heard cats can't actually taste sweet? Whatever it was, we used a little bit of watermelon juice in her water when she was dehydrated from surgery. (Her first spay wasn't closed up properly, boooooo)

Comment by Lizzie (not verified) Thu, 08/09/2012 - 22:52

Most cats I have known were fussy. Rook is certainly one of a kind!

Comment by Tsuki (not verified) Thu, 08/09/2012 - 23:45

Cats are naturally omnivorous ^^; They'll mostly eat meat, but dem likes dey fruits and veggies, too.

A lot of the times when a person has an animal that 'eats everything' (dogs included), it's actually because their food doesn't have enough protein in it. If what you're feeding your kitties has Corn, Wheat, or Soy products, those are fake proteins and they're not getting what they naturally want.

Look for foods that have chicken MEAL (not chicken by product or poultry meal--that stuff is gross), brewers or brown rice, and fruits and veggies. Your kitties will thank you!

Seconding this cat nutrition

Comment by Raptorix (not verified) Fri, 08/10/2012 - 15:01

Seconding this cat nutrition suggestion! Most common store-brand cat foods are full of fillers and byproducts that manufacturers put in the foods to cheapen them up! Anything with gluten, soy, or corn in it is basically 'empty calories' to a cat.
I go out of my way to purchase filler-free cat foods for my current kitties. My last two died of kidney failure and complications of hyper thyroid. Both diseases I'm connecting with their lifetime diet of those 'healthy' dry foods you find at the supermarket. (Iams, Science Diet, Friskies, etc.)

Comment by reinah (not verified) Thu, 08/09/2012 - 23:46

When I first got one of my kittens, she had been a sick neglected foster kitty, formerly a stray, so she had pretty much starved. Not only did she grab stuff off of my plate, she actually one time stole the entire aluminum tin filled with food from right in front of me. She was a freaking food ninja. She still eats everything, but at least she finally grew out of stealing all my food xP

My kitty did that too

Comment by F Saunders (not verified) Fri, 08/10/2012 - 11:58

An old roommate adopted a stray that someone brought to her pet clinic. The poor thing refused to eat at first but one day we found her with her head in the pasta pot, gonfing down furiously, despite the vet-approved kitty food we'd put out for her. She did start eating kitty food shortly after, but since then we could not leave any grain products out or she would gobble them up.

One time we were defrosting a loaf of bread on top of the fridge under a heavy pot but she knocked it down and started gnawing on it while it was still frozen. Another time she ripped through a plastic box to get at some muffins, and another time I found what appeared to be a stale bagel or donut behind the washing machine (her favorite hiding place) she had somehow snuck away from the garbage bin. It was clear she'd been gnawing on it for a long time.

It took about 5 years for this to stop. I think it had to do with switching her kitty food brand. My roommate used to get free fancy kitty food when she worked at the clinic, but when she quit and started buying from the grocery store, the kitty all but stopped attacking the grains. I think she wanted the grocery store brands all along.

Veggie Cat

Comment by AnnaMiss (not verified) Fri, 08/10/2012 - 06:02

This comic reminds me of my cat. Although he likes to eat cornbread. He will actually break up the cornbread into bite size pieces and pick them up with this paw and feed it to himself. Like it was finger food! Or I guess paw food in his case?

That's dual wielding for you! :D

Comment by Bunny (not verified) Fri, 08/10/2012 - 09:08

Rook is not so weird after all!

Seriously, though, every cat I've known has eaten non-meat stuff. My boy Looshkin, loves porridge, also crisps and, for some reason, cigarette butts, to the point if a smoker relative comes over we have to keep him from trying to eat the still-lit cigarette in the ashtray. Our girl Splodge loves cheese, but only if you hand-feed her a piece of cheese a crumb at a time. Our Mething, when she was alive, was a fiend for brussel sprouts and homemade bread. And wooden decorative butterflys. Don't ask. Cat loved curry.

Then again, our cats are spoiled rotten, since re regularly treat them with tinned tuna, cooked chicken and bacon, so possibly they've just decided they're entitled to everything we eat...

My cat does that too - the other day she ate an entire spear of broccoli that had fallen on the floor, and she has an obsession with trying to eat cookies whenever we make them. The only thing she doesn't like so far is potatoes and anything cracker-ish but that doesn't stop her from trying - she seems to forget she doesn't like them.

Comment by Pandiculator (not verified) Fri, 08/10/2012 - 13:12

We also have a non-carnivorous cat. He loves bread and carbs in basically any form, even over meat, in some instances. So strange!

Comment by Anonymous (not verified) Fri, 08/10/2012 - 13:56

Oh my god, my cat loved eating peas, freaking pea eating cat. She would get really mad if you made peas and didn't give her bowl of the stuff. That and cheese, no matter where she was or how quiet you were she would be right behind you the second the meat/cheese drawer was open.

My friend's cat though likes eating green beans, peaches (both fresh picked and from the can. He would eat the pit if we didn't wrestle it from him.) mushrooms, olives, even lychee fruit.

Kitties are weird.

Comment by drmike (not verified) Sun, 08/12/2012 - 11:59

We had a very large stray that we rescued who would basically sit in front of the food dish and not let any of the other cats, including the house cats, at it. Our vet suggested feeding the cat popcorn for the same reason why it's suggested for humans. It's supposed to fill the tummy making you feel full while not having a whole lot of calories. The vet strongly reminded us though to watch for kernels as cats can't digest them and they will cause blockages. Also to lay off of the butter as cats don't need the fat.

We already would pop corn a few times a week so it wasn't that big of a deal to leave a bowl of it out for them. Plus they liked to bop it around and play with them so it was a plus.

My Akita eats apples. He LOVES apples. I once offered him a choice between an apple and a lump of bleeding raw beef. He went for the apple. He even has a word for them. It is something like 'Mwoaf', and he will say this while doing a little dance to get you to give him an apple. It's unspeakably cute.
