IT IS A PRETTY ACCURATE TRANSCRIPTION
The actual story is that my dad is going to see one of his old middle school friends who now lives in Nara (which is famous for its deer shrine). The fellow's nickname back-then (but really, who keeps in touch with their friends from middle school?) was 'Monkey' (or I suppose 'Saru').
My dad's been swearing otherwise, but I still think the bad monkey with the baseball bat is supposed to be him.
I went to Nara when I was younger -- the only thing I can remember about it was the deer swarming me, then trying to eat my clothing. >:/
Oh, and I should mention, I'm still subbing over at Applegeeks until next week!

Nara
Comment by Sam (not verified) Tue, 01/13/2009 - 02:36Deer in Nara are psychotic aggressive that for whatever reason, get free run of the entire place. They develop an monumental attitude with no natural predators around.
Awesome picture! Thank goodness your Dad lived there before Nara got weirdo mascots like Sento-kun though :P(http://fieldweb.co.jp/designblog/2008/04/18/images/0418.gif).
Whoa
Comment by DJ (not verified) Tue, 01/13/2009 - 03:15I am genuinely at a loss as to how I'm supposed to react to that mascot. I'm confused. Is it like......Rudolf Buddha?
ZOMG it is SO a Rudolf
Comment by Izale (not verified) Tue, 01/13/2009 - 03:27ZOMG it is SO a Rudolf Buddha, and I am not ok with it. XD
Also, I love how the monkey on the deer is like, "dude... you are SO weird..."
Screentones
Comment by alice (not verified) Tue, 01/13/2009 - 02:54Hey Yuko, my apologies if you answered this before, but are you doing actual screentone on paper or is it all digital?
She does it digitally!
Comment by Ananth Tue, 01/13/2009 - 11:03She does it digitally!
Fun times?
Comment by DJ (not verified) Tue, 01/13/2009 - 03:14The last time my parents asked me for a favor it was to proofread a letter to some higher up at work. I was supposed to fix the English. At some point I gave up and just wrote a new letter because it was that bad. Yuko's dad's request is a lot cooler. Not sure if it's less frustrating. Cooler, yes.

Comment by Ananth Tue, 01/13/2009 - 11:04Hahahahaha dude the next time I see you, remind me to tell you some stories about Yuko's dad. I think you'll appreciate them. ;)
Oh, I don't doubt it
Comment by Robert V Aldrich (not verified) Wed, 01/14/2009 - 08:23Any man who orders a commission of a monkey with a baseball bat chasing another monkey riding a deer is a man I want to know more about.
I disagree
Comment by Emily (not verified) Tue, 01/13/2009 - 08:56Even knowing the whole story, this is funny as hell. Because you still had that phone conversation with your dad, and that drawing still resulted.
How odd
Comment by Decad (not verified) Tue, 01/13/2009 - 09:10That is the fourth most bizarre thing I have ever seen. Now I need to make it happen in real life. I'm off to the zoo!
Don't forget to take a bat

Must Meet Yuko's Pop!
Comment by Jamie Noguchi (not verified) Tue, 01/13/2009 - 11:36Fucking awesome!
From what little you've told me about your pops, the bad monkey must totally be him.
I actually went to Nara once. The deer are all up in your business unless you feed their pushy asses. Well, faces. Feed their faces. I think they'd kick you really fucking hard if you tried to feed their asses.
Deer
Comment by Caster (not verified) Tue, 01/13/2009 - 11:43Deer.
I LOLed
Comment by cacodaemonia (not verified) Tue, 01/13/2009 - 12:20Haha, that is awesome! XD I love how you get smaller and smaller in each panel, as the weirdness of the request increases. The little illustration is great, too. :)
I loved the deer in Nara. <3 I saw one having a wrestling match with an old man over a newspaper, and one deer that had learned to shake hands like a dog. They were so cute! ^3^
Finally
Comment by toshiro (not verified) Tue, 01/13/2009 - 12:21I guess it's pretty cheesy to say, but I laughed out loud at about 50% of the comics and smiled at the rest of them (and today's AppleGeeks). Thanks for making my day :)

Monkey on a deer
Comment by Cryptic (not verified) Wed, 01/14/2009 - 16:00You know, the great thing about this picture is that, weird and slightly odd the concept may be, it's actually really cute. I mean, look at the monkey on the deer. The face is soo adorable...^^
Wow..I need to lay off the caffeine.
I know several people have
Comment by Anonymous (not verified) Wed, 01/14/2009 - 22:20I know several people have said this already, but I just want to build on it. I would totally buy this as a T-Shirt. It's hilarious.

I DON'T KNOW HOW I MADE IT OUT ALIVE D=
...so now I tell my friends who are going to Japan "Wanna try something fun? Go to Nara and buy some deer biscuits."
So true...
Comment by gikamoth (not verified) Sat, 01/17/2009 - 15:23"We're going to Nara tomorrow"
"What?"
"It will be fun, there are deer."
"Okay, deer are cute" Thinking of various movies and stuff when passing by Discovery.
The next day was pretty much like the Lucky Star scene, except there was this scary old lady that sold the cookies and demanded respect from the deer like some sort of queen. She scared the deer away from small children so she was cool. The next time I went, I bought no cookies.
I'm not exactly sure thats safer, with the cookies you can pass it to someone else and run. Without them... you have to just run.
I feel your pain
Comment by Duffy Austin (not verified) Sat, 01/24/2009 - 19:22The deer thing I mean.
When I lived in Texas, there was a petting Zoo that had herds of deer walking around freely and you could go right up to them and pet them. Well there was this one herd that no one was going up to and being a 5-year-old I did so and next thing I knew they were all licking me! And I mean ALL of them. Thought it was pretty funny at the time.
I had to be fished out by my parents.
We have a picture of me hugging one (pre incident), and I suppose I am one of the only people in my family who does not go hunting. Ironically, I love venison (deer meat) :)
i am unaware of this species
Comment by Anonymous (not verified) Tue, 02/24/2009 - 00:24i am unaware of this species of monkey, but the monkies are missing their tails.
When I was a kid I got stuck
Comment by Kristen (not verified) Fri, 05/29/2009 - 22:14When I was a kid I got stuck with goat in a petting zoo and when I ran out of food to feed them they cornered me and started eating my shirt too. Thankfully a nice old man pulled me out and gave me to my mother.
I have reread this comic
Comment by mouse of anon (not verified) Wed, 06/17/2009 - 02:39I have reread this comic five times in as many hours. It remains completely, utterly, totally hilarious. Thank you; the many LOLs were much needed!
Clearly, your dad is
Comment by QuoteRadar (not verified) Tue, 07/21/2009 - 02:33Clearly, your dad is awesome. Also, the result of his request is awesome.
All the talk of the crazy deer in Nara reminds me of squirrels in Minnesota. On campus, they jump out of garbage cans at you. One came and sat on my backpack while I was out on the mall, and I fed him cheez-its until I had to go to class. Cute but disturbing.
AWESOME
Comment by Tim (not verified) Wed, 07/22/2009 - 01:46thats the most awesome picture i have ever seen... i followed you from Questionable Content.... thanks for you art..... very very cool!
