not nearly as fun as advertised

Tue, 12/02/2008 - 00:27 by Aido in response to the best sleep over ever

Back in the mid-90's, Parker Brothers made a series of activity sets called Sleepover Club (which I think were a part of some larger, terrifyingly girly franchise).  I got the Fortune Telling box for one of my awkward tween-ish birthdays and the lot of us decided that it was a pretty mediocre activity set and it was sequestered down to the Board Game and Mice Closet in the basement.

Conrad and I found it this past weekend.  He was at my parents' place so he could catch a post-Thanksgiving ride back to MD and it was late and we were real bored.  Also, still not that fun.

I need to prove to you guys that this thing exists.

my favorite part is how the gypsy girl looks like JTT

There was this overly-complicated MASH-like game that involved these cards covered in Events That A Girl Who Was 12 Years Old in the Mid-90's Might Find Exciting.  This was one of those cards, no joke:

Cure, like the band Cure?

Wow, I was just talking about him the other day to a friend. Oh man, the days of getting fluttery over magazine boys...

Comment by Lindsay (not verified) Tue, 12/02/2008 - 01:47

Wow all the things I've always wanted to do... get my ph.d, discover gold, win an olympic medal and oh yeah dump my boyfriend! Great goals to set, I must say!

Also discover the cure? The cure for the common cold? The cure for bored-ness? (cause thats one thing this game won't do!) Or are we talking about the band?

Great comic as usual!

Totally talking about the band. The cure for cancer or aids/hiv is totally less interesting then THE Cure for a tween girl.

Although I imagine wearing as much eyeliner as Robert Smith does may contribute to some diseases.

yeah..I was a bit like

Comment by Louisa (not verified) Sun, 02/15/2009 - 17:12

yeah..I was a bit like "Wtf?" the cure for cancer? But then I worked out it was The Cure, as in the band. Still..pretty weird, I didn't know they were THAT popular. I mean..Robert Smith wouldn't exactly be considered a "pin up boy" even if he could be considered cute in a..really..weird way.

Oh my god, I think my cousin had this. We never played it, but that picture of the cover looks mighty familiar.

I wanna create a memorable commercial! (wth? XD)

Comment by Awroo (not verified) Tue, 12/02/2008 - 04:16

Omg, there's totally, like, Mercury's planetary symbol. And what looks like half of Cancer. I need to get out more.

Dull to the max!

Comment by Decad (not verified) Tue, 12/02/2008 - 05:57

That looks like a good way to get someone to slit their throat with an ancient piece of card.

Really really bad and boring.

Accessories omg???

Comment by Allison (not verified) Tue, 12/02/2008 - 09:04

Does it come with the gypsy scarf and earrings? Because, wow, that would be worth playing if I could wear that the whole time!!

The game actually asks you

Comment by conrad Tue, 12/02/2008 - 14:45

The game actually asks you to put a shawl on your head, but reminds you not to tie it too tightly, as you can't tell fortunes with no blood in your head.

It also asks you to speak in a foreign accent. Sadly, this was the part of the game I was best at. XD

This is the best worst game

Wow, Dump my boyfriend AND own a dog?

Aim high, teens of the nineties. Aim high.

It was the only exciting

Comment by katie (not verified) Tue, 12/02/2008 - 11:51

It was the only exciting thing around since american cartoons at this time were going down in a slow spiral of suckiness. (thankfully anime filled that void pretty fast in the 90s personally)

.... I absolutely had this

Comment by Anonymous (not verified) Tue, 12/02/2008 - 13:26

.... I absolutely had this as a kid as well.
My friends and I couldn't figure it out how to actually play.
Oh the days.

We just giggled at the cards

Comment by conrad Tue, 12/02/2008 - 14:43

If it's any consolation: we couldn't figure out how to play it either, and we're 20-somethings.

Comment by Laura (not verified) Tue, 12/02/2008 - 14:22

During a recent "Girls Night" we played Girl Talk, that infamously 1988version-preteen-stupidly-girly-game, but it ended up being hilarious.

*snirk* Jonathan Taylor Thomas... Yes, I had a crush on him when I was 12.

Wow, that's exactly the game

Comment by Ains (not verified) Tue, 12/02/2008 - 17:37

Wow, that's exactly the game I was thinking of when I saw this.. Girl Talk and Dream Date- so the best of the worst '90s board games!

I still HAD Dream Date for

Comment by Sandi (not verified) Tue, 12/02/2008 - 20:11

I still HAD Dream Date for posterity's sake until just a few years ago... I wanted to show it to my kids in one of those "back in MY DAY..." moments. My mother threw it away, though. Alas.

ohhh snap

Comment by Justine (not verified) Tue, 12/02/2008 - 22:52

I totally had sleep over club books. You know... because cause kids used to read back then... XD

I don't understand the game.

Discover the cure for what. Also Get a great job and get promoted kind of go together in one thing. a few of those things can go together as one. Take an Art Class. really did the people that made this game not go to school. everyone took a freaking art class in school. I guess girls just think differently then guys o.o . oh well. at least they sold one of their sleep over games.

This is eerie only in how often Jonathan Taylor Thomas has been coming up in conversations with me lately.

I love how owning a dog and getting a PH.D. are equally exciting events.

Yayz tomboy-ish tweens 'n stuff

Comment by Keyaroscuro (not verified) Wed, 12/03/2008 - 02:06

Wow, glad my parents skipped over this particular franchise when I was a tween. I got a skateboard and soccer ball for one of my tween-ish birthday presents. Although I must admit that I did get encompassed by the beanie baby phase when that came around, so I wasn't all tomboy. >_>'

I got a skateboard and that

Comment by skateboarder (not verified) Thu, 09/20/2012 - 08:21

I got a skateboard and that was it, never have any interest beside that :)

I like that make a memorable commercial was an option, since...well I've always dreamed, someday, I would write a commercial. but asking for it to be memorable is getting kinda greedy.

Fortune Teller

Comment by Anonymous (not verified) Thu, 04/16/2009 - 04:55

Is it just me or does the fortune teller look eerily like Beyonce Knowles? :|

Never had that one...

Comment by Meg (not verified) Fri, 04/24/2009 - 16:42

Wow, never had that particular game. I had Dream Date and Mall Madness. Our supernatural part of tween girl of the mid-90s sleepovers was pulling out the Ouija board and scaring ourselves silly.

Comment by Kit (not verified) Wed, 06/17/2009 - 05:20

I think the last category seems to be a little bit reversed -- starting with being on the cover of Teen and ending with owning a dog. WTF? I think you should probably have owned a dog by the time you hit a magazine cover,or at least should have decided whether or not you want one.
