inscrutable language joke

... this joke takes a little bit of explanation unless you have a rudimentary understanding of Japanese. Basically, sukiyaki is a dish and daisuki means "to like a lot". So, if you really like sukiyaki and (terrible) puns, you can say "daisuki-yaki" and ...

*stares in Yuko's direction* Well, I know someone who feel compelled to say it every time we have sukiyaki at her parents' house.

One of the anecdotes on Wikipedia explains the origins of the word sukiyaki: the kanji in sukiyaki basically mean "plow" and "cook". This is because medieval farmers would heat up their plows and cook the meat right on top of them! I thought that was a neat explanation, whether or not it's true. I honestly thought I was the only person who came up with horrible puns like this at meal times with non-Japanese speakers. My days of biting my tongue are at an end, thanks Yuko!!

For people who want to try the joke on people who actually speak Japanese... it's probably not that funny to them. I think it works best for those who have taken a little Japanese in school. It's just not in the form of a traditional Japanese pun, so they probably would think you were just spouting gibberish.

Wouldn't daisukiyaki just mean Great sukiyaki?

Yes, I came from the Japanese school of "Daikatana = great sword!" AKA video games.

The fact that I immediately got this pun just proves that I am a complete and total dork. I <3 DNAngel for teaching me such important things such as the difference between Daisuke and Daisuki, so that I may understand puns on webcomics.

Well ... I really laugh a lot with this one because my roomate's parents are from Japan but He growed up almost his entyre life in Argentina ... The thing is that he always made that kind of jokes that nobody can understand without a good japanese language explanation ... :P
