Okay, so ...
... this joke takes a little bit of explanation unless you have a rudimentary understanding of Japanese. Basically, sukiyaki is a dish and daisuki means "to like a lot". So, if you really like sukiyaki and (terrible) puns, you can say "daisuki-yaki" and ...
...
*stares in Yuko's direction* Well, I know someone who feel compelled to say it every time we have sukiyaki at her parents' house.
One of the anecdotes on Wikipedia explains the origins of the word sukiyaki: the kanji in sukiyaki basically mean "plow" and "cook". This is because medieval farmers would heat up their plows and cook the meat right on top of them! I thought that was a neat explanation, whether or not it's true. You can read a whole lot more about it at the wikipedia article up top, or right here.

Comment by MegW (not verified) Fri, 03/13/2009 - 11:21I honestly thought I was the only person who came up with horrible puns like this at meal times with non-Japanese speakers. My days of biting my tongue are at an end, thanks Yuko!!
not crazy.
Comment by Rachelle (not verified) Fri, 03/13/2009 - 15:11Yuko, you are totally not crazy. SUKIYAKI IS THE BEST. SERIOUSLY. I want to eat it all of the time <3! Let's get sukiyaki together when I'm in town!
Just a warning
Comment by Frog42 (not verified) Fri, 03/13/2009 - 15:19For people who want to try the joke on people who actually speak Japanese... it's probably not that funny to them. I think it works best for those who have taken a little Japanese in school. It's just not in the form of a traditional Japanese pun, so they probably would think you were just spouting gibberish.
Gomen chai.... latte.
Wouldn't daisukiyaki just
Comment by Sovy Kurosei (not verified) Sat, 03/14/2009 - 07:53Wouldn't daisukiyaki just mean Great sukiyaki?
Yes, I came from the Japanese school of "Daikatana = great sword!" AKA video games.

Comment by Naktarr (not verified) Sat, 03/14/2009 - 19:39I didn't though, it took two re-reads of Ananth's comment and three of the footnote of the comic for me to get everything - yeah I must be one of the few here who has never studied any Japanese or, sadly, has no Japanese friends to teach me anything.
I WILL PAY IN FULL

Comment by QuoteRadar (not verified) Tue, 07/21/2009 - 00:49I LOVE multi-lingual puns, but I usually stop myself from saying them in public because I get similar reactions. So this comic made my day.
Really, Japanese is one of the best languages for wordplay. Verbal and written.
