SMELL -10
IF HE HAD BEEN THE MAIN CHARACTER IT WOULD HAVE BEEN CALLED FIFTH SENSE (DUDE CONRAD I'M SORRY YUKO THOUGHT OF IT DDD: DON'T BEAT MEEEE)
It's well-documented around here that Conrad actually doesn't have any sense of smell, but it's one of those things that we tend to forget. In a lot of ways it's pretty similar to how forgetful I am about Hawk and Ramadan ... except in this case everyone forgets, so maybe I am just being a jerk to Hawk.
Conrad does have days when he can sometimes smell things, but it's tough to say what triggers it.
And before anyone asks, he can taste things just fine! It's quite the conundrum. CONRAD IS A MAN OF MYSTERY

Poor Conrad.
Comment by Louis (not verified) Sun, 01/25/2009 - 02:19MOST REPEATED SUBJECT LINE EVERRR. But, yeah, I have a massive cold right now, it sucks having to taste without smell. I can't tell if I'm making something too strong/hot until it's in my mouth and I'm choking like a fish in air. Except for my awesome cough syrup. Mmmmm licorice. I bet even Conrad could smell it, it's so powerful.
NO

I too have no sense of smell ^_^ And if I do get an occasional whiff of something, no one else smells it until much later :\ FUTURE SMELLERS FTW
ILU Conrad!

Comment by Sarah (not verified) Mon, 01/26/2009 - 13:50I'm new to reading this comic, and it's such a weird coincidence that I stumble on this one - I, too, have no sense of smell (and my friends always forget, too... my boyfriend's mother even bought me perfume for Christmas and there was this whole long awkward discussion...)
Conrad, there is love from New Jersey being sent your way.

Comment by Mogmatt (not verified) Mon, 01/26/2009 - 15:32I just wanted to get the 100th comment. n_n Mission accomplished?
D'aww, poor lad, no delicious coffee smells first thing in the morning? No frying fish fingers to wake you from an afternoon's kip?
On the other end of the spectrum, my nose is extra-sensitive. Not perfumier-standard, but close enough to frighten my folks when I'm the only one who smells burning. And enough to make me gag whenever they cook kedgerrie and leave it in the larder opposite my room. Hmm.
Higher power sense of humor.
Comment by Damaged (not verified) Mon, 01/26/2009 - 15:46I normally have regular smelling skills, lets say on a scale of 1-20 im at 10 normally. But somtimes for no reason it will either Jump to a new height and I can smell what my aunt is cooking a across the street when her doors and windows are closed, To I smell NOTHING!. >> its agrivating esp when I walk into someplace midly unpleasent smelling and then they shoot up to level 20 and I can smell things...I would rather forget. Or when im cooking and waiting for the right aroma before I add somthing ( I was taught to cook mostly on smell...my luck)and my smell goes dead and my food dies. :<
so to Conrad I know the pain.
and to Yuko Thank you so much for filling in on Applegeeks your art style is wonderfull and I can't wait to see more.

Comment by Anonymous (not verified) Tue, 01/27/2009 - 23:38i also have no sense of smell! no identified reason for it, and it doesn't work even sometimes. you are lucky conrad! at least this way people won't be 'but you miss out on LIFE!!1' all the freaking time. everyone (close family included) forget all the time for me too.
Horray unsmelling peeps
Comment by Joeski (not verified) Mon, 02/02/2009 - 02:15I lost my sense of smell after a trip through Europe's dirtiest cities. They weren't that interesting, either. (France, the cleanest of the three, was also more interesting. Rome did have good food and a cymbalum player, at least.)
Anywho, I have sinusitis. I can't smell garlic, now. D:
Or any other foods. It makes me sad.
I get the pleasure of old mucus, though, so that's fun.
Now I'm just whining. Blarg. Go Conrad!

Comment by Peirrin (not verified) Mon, 05/04/2009 - 20:59Here's another one of the people with no sense of smell. Or to be more accurate, it comes and goes. Mostly gone though.
Sometimes I smell things that aren't there. Like my mind is making it up out of nostalgia. (I used to have a GREAT sense of smell. It went away about 2 years ago.)
I can still taste BTW, Food just tastes different now. And not as good.
And no one, ever, EVER seems to remember that when they say, "Can you smell that? Doesn't that smell great?" That I'm going to give them that blank stare and say. "No."
And then I'll cry. :{P
Other people with anosmia
Comment by MineTruly (not verified) Tue, 06/02/2009 - 22:44Here's the Wikipedia entry on anosmia (inability to smell): http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anosmia
Here's a guy with no sense of smell who wrote an FAQ: http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgtatham/smell.html

Comment by MineTruly (not verified) Tue, 06/02/2009 - 22:45Has Conrad had this condition since birth? Or did it appear at some point in his life?

Comment by Nudes (not verified) Wed, 06/17/2009 - 05:26A close friend of mine from grade school can't smell at all either - and I also never remember even though I've known her for like eight years. I'd hold things up to her face and be all "does this smell funny to you?" and she'd get mad.... many good "oh crap I'm so sorry" moments to be had.
And she could taste just fine, though she eats mostly candy. Perhaps sugar is her strongest tongue-sense, I dunno.

Comment by Cora (not verified) Thu, 06/18/2009 - 18:39Aw, it's okay. I have the same problem as well.
It has its upsides. If someone farts I usually can't smell it! Yay!
...Unless it's really really bad. I'm talking deadly. Ew...

Comment by Ruth (not verified) Wed, 07/22/2009 - 16:14I actually have a friend who can't smell either, at all, though her sense of taste is pretty shitty too. Weird shit.
Late to the party
Comment by Cat (not verified) Thu, 10/22/2009 - 20:32Wow, I cannot believe how many people read this AND commented who have this problem. I mean, I have it too. Same deal. Pretty sure I can taste, although coffee lacks much of its allure for me because I ONLY get the taste. Can't see worth shit though so no superpowers there.
BUT
Sometimes I smell something really, really strongly from the PAST. It's annoying because it won't go away for hours and because there's never any actual smell-related trigger, just usually sight or situations or something.
Anyway this comic sums up things hilariously well.
Those... Those eyes...
Comment by Kerry (not verified) Tue, 11/17/2009 - 17:04Those... Those eyes... They're like a cross between the eyes of a wounded deer and the eyes of a puppy who's just been kicked. ;_; MY VERY SOUL ACHES JUST LOOKING AT THEM

Comment by Archarbiter (not verified) Wed, 03/03/2010 - 04:46I've got the same problem. I can taste fine but I couldn't smell rotten eggs if you put 'em in my face.
Yeah, that is weird
Comment by Danny (not verified) Sat, 08/07/2010 - 11:05I have mostly the same problems. For the most part I can't smell anything unless you put it right under my nose AND it's a particularly strong smell.
It's fairly convienient as far as I'm concerned. I can't remember ever being able to smell so it's not like I know what I'm missing. And I don't have to smell the persistently bad stuff, like when we drive by an open sewer and everyone cringes. Or like when I was stationed in Korea and everyone said the country smelled like a mix of pollution and urine.
The only inconvienience I experience is that I don't know if my clothes smell.
I had a teacher
Comment by Grim (not verified) Thu, 10/21/2010 - 12:26I had a teacher my senior year of high school in English who had no sense of smell either which confused me cause everyone is always like 'you can't taste without smell' but she did just fine it literally took a whole class period once where we all just said how impossible it was and she kept going 'guys...it's really not that hard to get' lol

Comment by Chelsea (not verified) Tue, 11/02/2010 - 10:34I JUST FOUND OUT ABOUT THIS WEBCOMIC AN HOUR AGO AND WAS PLANNING TO BE ONE OF THOSE NINJA READERS WHO'D FREQUENTLY CHECKOUT THE SITE BUT NEVER COMMENT...
AND THEN I FOUND THIS COMIC. :O
... I was born without a sense of smell, and it's the first time I found someone who can relate. Yay Conrad! =)))))
I am Anosmic
Comment by coffeepillow (not verified) Wed, 11/24/2010 - 21:03I started reading Johnny Wander about a month ago and I've been slowly trying to read all of your posts thus far and I love them all.
I just wanted to say I am anosmic because I have Kallmann's Syndrome, which for some reason a symptom is that I can't smell and never have been able to. Let me just say for anyone reading these comments from this long ago, I must have a lowered ability to taste, but I don't notice at all since I was born with it.
A big part of tasting for me is that there are differing levels of the 5 tastes, different textures, levels of heat, ect... I probably just notice different things than others who can smell. I'm not a picky eater too, I actually like natto.

Boy I wish I had a sense of smell -.-
Maybe he would be able to
Comment by Emy (not verified) Fri, 01/18/2013 - 07:58Maybe he would be able to smell things better with more humid air. Actually, all human beings are able to smell better when the air is more humid, so maybe this would help him too?
