Sonic and Knuckles

Sonic and Knuckles

Thu, 12/18/2008 - 00:05 by Ananth in response to a netflix for books

The first time I heard about Netflix it was one of those, "Damn, I should have thought of that" moments. For the record, I am a big fan, for more than just the entertainment value - Netflix is a good example of capitalism at work. In Netflix, your Blockbusters and Hollywood videos finally had a tough competitor, which was great because they could no longer charge their outrageous rental fees. It's a measure of how successful Netflix has been that rental outlets have been closing down left and right ... Netflix is more convenient for the user in every aspect, and what they do requires less investment and manpower, so it's win-win.

All that having been said, it's hard for me to write off rental stores. The Blockbuster in Wheaton was a big part of my childhood ... Archer's dad would take Archer and my brother and I out to rent movies and video games every couple of weeks like clockwork. The one trip I remember with particular clarity was when we rented Sonic & Knuckles. There were three copies on the shelf, and we were ecstatic when we realized we got the last one. We brought it home and the weekend was a blur of pixels running sideways really fast, in-game or otherwise. I'm crossing my fingers and hoping that one day they release a new (I'm italicizing for YOU Sega!) sidescrolling Sonic game for the XBox360 (Megaman 9 was a success, even if it was balls to the wall hard). I can dream, right? HAHA no they're never going to release anything like that. D:

In my defense, the library

In my defense, the library doesn't mail you your books. They do have room to improve.

Comment by Chris (not verified) Thu, 12/18/2008 - 06:33

True, but the Library could add services at a monthly fee like netflix. It'd be a good way for them to increase revenue to buy more books, replace worn out ones and pay their librarians better. And it'll attract more people to libraries, rather than for just certain types of people.

The Library has nothing but gain to get from it.

Comment by Decad (not verified) Thu, 12/18/2008 - 07:43

Some libraries do offer the services you have mentioned.

IS LIBRARIAN APPROVED. It's true, some libraries do offer extra services for fees. The main reason so many don't is that either they can't afford the extra labor it would take, unless they charged so much that no one would use the service, or they've done tests and surveys and found that no one in their service area wants it. Plus, there really is this mentality in public libraries that getting people to actually go into the bu8ilding is still a big part of the goal, but that's rapidly shifting. So it's entirely possible that more public libraries will begin implementing these types of services within the next few years. Just depends on what people are willing to pay for it and where libraries can find the labor hours and all. LECTURE OVER.

I stand corrected. I'll have to see if my local library does that sort of thing. Thanks for the info ^_^

In the town where I was born...

Comment by John Kelly (not verified) Thu, 12/18/2008 - 10:33

Monroe County (where RIT is (in NY, USA for all you foreigners)) started a terrible practice where you had to prove that you lived in the county to get a library card. So, if you lived in the middle of the county you were fine, but if you lived just outside of the county (as some of the "Monroe County" school districts went over county lines) you had to pay FEES per MCL card, even for students, students of Monroe County public schools.

In my opinion there were too many under-utilized housewives manning my library, they could have done away with half and replaced some of the broken fixtures, or you know, NOT CHARGED USE FEES AT A PUBLIC LIBRARY.

Comment by stevehill (not verified) Fri, 12/19/2008 - 11:49

Yeah, I'm painfully aware of the MCL system and their ridiculosity (that's right, it's bad enough that I had to make up a word to describe it). Although, they DO have CDs (and DVDs) there and I got an ENTIRE sound effects library for FREE! *dances about*

I don't use our library nearly often enough. For a while though, there was a thing where people from out-of town (in the MD) had to pay outrageous fees, because the MD wasn't part of the library board-thingey. So really, our town was subsidizing our library, but it was cheap-as-free for me. ($7 for the card I think, then never again except overdues...)

re: the comic

Comment by Rae (not verified) Thu, 12/18/2008 - 01:02

Some of my favorite comics have John in them. This one in particular made me laugh out loud and startle my mother.

Another mispronunciation

Comment by stevehill (not verified) Thu, 12/18/2008 - 02:35

To tie your blog post in with the last comic, I used to play Sonic and "K'noo-klees" all the time. It was only after a few years of school that I learned that "K'noo-klees" and those thing on the outside of the joints of your fingers were in fact the same thing.

I've never been unsuccessful at keeping a new comment un-nested...

But on the other hand, I can't imagine it would be that hard to fix...

A birthday present from me to you!!!

Comment by conrad Fri, 12/19/2008 - 11:57

It's totally not hard to fix? We just need to do it.

Actually, I'll probably do that today.

but what do i know...

Comment by Kata (not verified) Thu, 12/18/2008 - 10:02

Netflix is great, but the whole subscription with the 360 thing annoys me. Being able to simply download movies is uber convenient, but I've heard that you can't get subtitles in this format. So, deaf and hard of hearing = lose : (

In other news, I do the same exact thing regarding "there should be a place you can rent books" on a regular basis : P

Comment by Pablo Famoso (not verified) Mon, 12/22/2008 - 14:18

Uh, no. It's perhaps the best Sonic game since Sonic Adventure 1 for Dreamcast! It does, however, get ridiculously hard at the last stage but that's besides the point!

All time favourite Sonic game (goodbye Sonic 3 & Knuckles)!

Sonic and Knuckles

Comment by Carl L. (not verified) Thu, 12/18/2008 - 19:16

I didn't even know this game existed until a month or two ago. I was deprived as a child. =(

Thanks to the power of eBay, I can now say I have played it!
Not well... but I've played it!

Conrad's Hair

Comment by Jacob (not verified) Thu, 12/18/2008 - 20:56

Kind of off topic, but have you noticed that Conrad's hair looks like some kind of small ferret? Look, there are two little ears and two lines for eyes...

Oh, yeah!

Comment by Jacob (not verified) Thu, 12/18/2008 - 21:00

Oh, yeah! And if you go back to older comics, it still looks like that. Its creepy!

(Don't stop drawing him like that, though, Yuko <_ <;;)

Conrad's 'hair'

Comment by Bryce (not verified) Fri, 12/19/2008 - 02:33

OMG, Conrad's actually bald and he kills small mammals and puts them on his head!

Comment by stevehill (not verified) Fri, 12/19/2008 - 11:53

He made me go "cat hunting" with him one time because he had a big date and needed a last-minute "bagger." I will forever be scarred. Poor Mittens... ;_;

I told you never to tell

Comment by conrad Fri, 12/19/2008 - 11:58

I told you never to tell that story to anyone and now you've gone and let the cat out of the bag you're the worst. D:

Better out of the bag than on your head! 8D

I totallly remember this.

Comment by Archer (not verified) Fri, 12/19/2008 - 15:30

Haha, holy crap I totally remember this! I also remember the day I actually bought Sonic and Knuckles. It took like eleventy billion hours after I got it to get home because my dad had errands to run. I remember sitting in the car wishing there was someway I could play it now. It was kind of traumatizing now that I think about it. Maybe that's the reason my DS stays within 5 feet of me all the time everywhere ever.

BTW that Blockbuster is like a crappy thrift store or something now. Even though I hadn't used it in forever it was kind of depressing that it's gone.

Hahaha, dude, hey!!

Comment by Ananth Fri, 12/19/2008 - 20:15

Ahaha, hey man! Sonic & Knuckles is sweet.

That is a bummer about the Blockbuster! No wonder I never see the sign anymore ... I drove through Wheaton a little while ago and I was wondering if I just didn't have my bearings. I almost went and talked about all the times Sam went dumpster-diving behind the Blockbuster, but I thought better of it, hahaha.

This totally happened to me too.

This would have made more sense if they were in a Blockbuster store and he said that except with Blockbuster. Libraries don't deliver books to your doorstep...

Yay free books!

Comment by Hollywood Car Crash (not verified) Tue, 12/23/2008 - 00:49

I personally love the public library, in fact I own more manga than my library has. (Man, now that I think about it, that's a little bit depressing. lol)
As for the delivery of books to your door, my public library only offers drop off and pick up of materials to people who are home-bound only. Like invalids and the elderly.
I think that a Netflixs style system probably wouldn't work too well, there has to be a time limit on how long you can retain books or the waiting lists would be more outrageous than they already are.
But I think I'll bring it up at the next city council meeting, totally sweet idea. ^_^

megaman 9

Comment by Austin (not verified) Thu, 01/01/2009 - 16:21

Tornado man has the hardest and most hilarious level ever. The balloon enemys have to be the funiest. note that my brand of humor also spawns from being up until 6am, then playing this game.

This one made me giggle.

Comment by Chris (not verified) Fri, 01/23/2009 - 11:05

This one made me giggle.

Sonic and Knuckles (and Sonic 3) was (were?) my favorite games when I was a kid. Not only for their inherent quality, but for the novelty of putting one cartridge inside another.

has anyone mentioned how much is on many library websites
and the free ebooks and audiobooks
Even enjoying much audio available as free podcasts
I still use my library for books not in public domain or creative commons every week
